- ESB alumni are international more than 75%
of alumni are pursuing a job with international or global scope. An
estimated 25% to 30% of alumni are working outside Germany.
- Little more than half of our alumni are
working in the services sector. Management consulting and investment
banking are the most popular service industries. In the manufacturing
sector, consumer good manufacturers remain number one.
- In the manufacturing sector, more than 50%
of alumni are holding functions in marketing and
planning/controlling.
- Companies pay dearly to hire ESB alumni. In
general, compensation packages have increased. In recent years, starting
salaries have exceeded DM80,000 p.a. for half of the graduates. Starting
salaries of more than DM100,000 are more frequently reported than
before, and in a few instances even significantly higher starting
salaries have been commanded by ESB alumni.
- An estimated 25% of alumni pursue
postgraduate studies at some point. The majority attends a Master of
Business Administration (MBA) program. ESB alumni with an MBA degree
usually accumulated work experience before pursuing their graduate
degree, whereas other postgraduate studies (e.g., Master of Art or
international relations) are most often pursued directly upon graduation
from ESB. Only few ESB alumni pursue PhD studies.
- More than 98% of the alumni would chose the
ESB again thats a strong message!
Geographic scope alumni are international
The majority of alumni work in Germany (about
70%), 10% to 15% in other European countries. The remaining alumni work
all over the world.
(to view a slightly larger version of this map, click here)
Within Germany, alumni are primarily located in
Bavaria, the Frankfurt region, Nord-Rhein Westfalen, and
Baden-Württemberg.
Even if the location is within Germany, the
scope of work is international or global for most alumni. One quarter of
alumni have a position with global scope, whereas more than 50% hold
positions with international scope.
Distribution by industry sector the services sector is slightly higher represented
An estimated 55% of ESB alumni are working in
the professional services sector. Within the services sector, most alumni
chose jobs in management consulting (38%). Investment bankers have moved
to the second position within a few years (14%), overtaking alumni in
accounting and other financial services firms. Universal banks and
insurance companies continue to attract a large group of alumni (11%).
Comparing starting and current positions of
alumni in the services sector, there is a clear trend from accounting and
universal banking/insurance to telecommunications/IT and management
consulting.
In the manufacturing sector, consumer goods
manufacturers are the number one choice (45%). Electronics/medical devices
and the automotive industries are the second and third choices.
The comparison between starting and current
positions in the manufacturing sector shows that plant and machinery
manufacturers and the computer hardware and logistics industries are no
longer represented (at least in this survey). On the other hand, positions
with consumer goods manufacturers have increased.
Distribution of ESB alumni by function
marketing is number one
One third of alumni in manufacturing companies
hold marketing positions. Planning/ controlling is the second largest
group with 22%. Management and finance functions also attract many
alumni.
Managerial responsibility seems to be low with
two thirds of alumni without direct reports and about 20% with one to
three direct reports. This somewhat surprising outcome is a reflection of
the over-proportional number of recent graduates (since 1994)
participating in this survey
Salaries companies pay dearly for ESB alumni
The majority of starting salaries of the
classes of 1994 to 1997 lie in the range of DM 61.000 to DM 80.000. There
are only few outliers at the low end. Salaries above DM 80.000 are
becoming increasingly more common (e.g. about 50% of answers from the
class of 1997). In the last two classes, starting salaries of up to even
DM 150.000 have been reported!
Postgraduate studies the majority relies on the ESB degree
An estimated quarter of ESB alumni have pursued
postgraduate studies. Two thirds of this group obtained a Masters of
Business Administration (MBA). ESB alumni went on to obtain MBA degrees
from prestigious institutions such as the Harvard Business School,
Kellogg, and Wharton in the U.S., Ottawa in Canada, or INSEAD, IESE and
Rotterdam in Europe.
Other postgraduate studies pursued include
PhDs, Masters of Art at various European universities, and international
relations or language studies.
More than 90% of the postgraduate degrees were
obtained at institutions outside Germany. Half of the alumni with
postgraduate degrees obtained the these degrees after some years of work
experience. Doctoral degrees were mostly pursued directly upon graduation
from ESB.
ESB again? Ofcourse!
More than 98% of ESB alumni would attend the
course again. The most often mentioned reasons are the international
dimension of the program, the quality of students and faculty, the
practical learning, the relative compactness of the course, the excellent
job prospects, and, above all, a lot of fun and great
parties!
